It buys one audiobook at any price," and that the gap between the two plan prices is what a credit costs. The Compare section runs the four head-to-heads that decide the question — Audible against Kindle Unlimited ("separate subscriptions with separate catalogs and separate fees"), reading against listening as a matter of when a reader's hands are free, and each service against Libby.

Its method is a checking procedure, published as one: "We read the terms, check them against Amazon's own pages, print the date we checked, and do the arithmetic on whether a subscription actually beats buying the books." Where the source pages do not state a figure — credit allowances, catalog size — the site says so rather than repeating a number in circulation, and it treats catalog size as the wrong test regardless: "what matters is whether the specific books you want are in the one you are paying for." The counts it prints are the ones that constrain it rather than flatter it — 0 sponsored placements, 0 free products or perks accepted, and, most unusually for the category, "audiobooks we claim to have personally listened to before recommending a subscription: none." What makes it a Type 5 Marketing brand is that it argues against its own revenue in writing. Amazon Associates pays a flat fee for a trial signup — "not a share of anything you buy afterward, and nothing extra comes out of your pocket" — and the site still sends readers to the library on the merits: "Libby is free and we earn nothing from it. For a lot of readers it is still the right answer." Written by Stephen V., who positions himself as "an enthusiast who got tired of not being able to get a straight answer" rather than an expert, it competes on dated, sourced verifiability instead of borrowed authority, routes corrections to a published address, and re-dates a page when something changes. A subscription brand whose homepage subtitle is "when to skip them" is doing the same job as every other property in the portfolio: earning the click by being right, not by being enthusiastic.
